Blogger Entry #5: Social Issues

Due:  Tuesday, March 29th



Part 1:  Finding a Social Issue

  1. Pick a social problem/issue that you are interested in  (ex: hunger, poverty, ageism, alcoholism, bullying, spousal abuse... for more examples of contemporary social issues check out:

  2. Find 1 scholarly article that discusses your social issue.  Use:
    1. google scholar 
    2. school library database 
    3. Search keywords related to your social issue
      1. narrow it down by location if you have to (i.e. homelessness in the state of California) 
      2. also make sure to find something from the last 5 years 
  3. Once you select your issue and find an article, in your post, include the following information:
    1. link to article 
    2. title of article & author(s) 
    3. 1 page description of the article.  In your own words explain:
      1. Thesis/Main argument
      2. Supporting evidence that backs up the main point of the article
      3. the author's conclusion/end results or idea  

Part 2: Finding an Organization 

  1. Once you have picked your social issue, you are going to look for an organization that is related to your social issue (ex:  Social Issue: animal abuse & rights, Organization: PETA).  You want to find an organization that attempts to deal with the social issue at hand in some way.  Your organization can be a non-profit, government based, privately funded, local, international, small and unknown, or well known.  
  2. Find one article that discusses your organization in some way and write a paragraph summary on it.  This does not have to be a scholarly article.  
  3. Find the following information about your organization
    1. context info
      1. when was it made
      2. who created it and is a part of it 
      3. location 
      4. type of organization (non-profit, etc.) 
      5. who works there or who can
    2. Purpose 
      1. what is the goal or mission of the organization 
      2. what services do they provide to meet this goal 
      3. what do they hope to accomplish
